PEDIATRIC PHYSICAL THERAPY

THERAPY & EVALUATIONS

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy for children, focuses on improving children's mobility, strength, and motor skills. It is designed to address various conditions and developmental challenges in infants, toddlers, and adolescents. TPTC Physical Therapists employ play-based activities to engage children in therapy sessions, making the process enjoyable and interactive. They work with children with conditions like cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, developmental delays, and sports injuries. Through individualized treatment plans, our therapists aim to enhance balance, coordination, and posture while promoting independence and participation in daily activities. Pediatric physical therapy plays a crucial role in helping children reach their developmental milestones and lead healthier, more active lives.

Evaluations

Physical therapy enhances a patient's motor development, physical capabilities, coordination, gait, and self-assurance. TPTC's Doctor of Physical Therapy possess extensive expertise in pediatric physical development techniques.

Your child will undergo a comprehensive evaluation, and if therapy is deemed necessary, under your child's specific insurance guidelines a tailored treatment plan will be devised to address physical limitations, drawing upon a distinctive combination of conventional physical therapy methods. TPTC's physical therapists actively involve patients in enjoyable and motivating activities specifically designed to achieve each child's unique treatment objectives.

Therapy

A range of treatment techniques will be employed to target the identified areas from the initial evaluation and align with the goals established by the parent and therapist, as well as overall functional performance.

Physical therapy may be recommended if we observe deficiencies in your child's development, such as:

  • Balance and coordination
  • Posture and gait (walking/correcting toe walking)
  • Joint mobility and range of motion
  • Coordination and motor planning
  • Muscle strength and tone
  • Equipment needs

Signs That Your Child May Need an PT Evaluation

If you're concerned that your child is not meeting their gross motor milestones such as:

  • Crawling
  • Walking
  • Jumping
  • Running
  • Poor balance or coordination skills

They may benefit from a physical therapy evaluation. If you discover your child is affected by one of the following conditions, they're likely a good candidate for TPTC's physical services program:

  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Down syndrome
  • Spina bifida
  • Cerebral palsy

Sports-related injuries are a prevalent cause for pediatric physical therapy in Alabama. When a child excels in football, soccer, or baseball, an injury may appear to signal the termination of their athletic pursuits.
